Our School

St Mary’s is a growing church school, set in an idyllic rural location on the fringe of Writhlington village.  The school roll is currently 141 + our Nursery. We have seven classes, allowing us to operate as single year groups throughout the school.

Little Acorns      Nursery ( two to four year olds)

Little Oaks         Reception (four & five year olds)

Class 1                Year 1  (five & six year olds)

Class 2                Year 2  (six & seven year olds)

Class 3                Year 3 (seven & eight year olds)

Class 4                Year 4 (eight & nine year olds)

Class 5                Year 5 (nine & ten year olds)

Class 6                Year 6 (ten & eleven year olds)

Each class comprises mixed-ability children and the class sizes are normally small in comparison to most other primary schools, averaging low 20s.

We are also delighted to operate our own Nursery class – the perfect introduction to our lovely school.  We could accommodate up to 20 children for each session in the Nursery, including a small number of two year olds. Our Early Years team has worked hard to achieve the Bristol Standard accreditation, validators noting, "...how well the new build has integrated the nursery into the whole school community."

We enjoy excellent facilities including a large hall, and interactive screens in every classroom. The beautiful extensive grounds include a large playing field, quiet areas, playgrounds, conservation areas, a woodland area and a sensory garden.

“A strong feature of the school is its full and engaging curriculum." [Ofsted 2018]

"Pupils and parents are positive about how teachers help pupils to stay healthy...

...pupils behave well and work hard. Teachers make learning interesting and celebrate pupils' successes..."

We were again judged to be officially “good” in all areas by Ofsted at their last inspection in July 2018. We have a highly qualified, highly skilled staff.

"Staff morale is high and, together with governors, there is a commitment from...all to raise standards."

All work well together to provide a school in which children feel happy and safe as well as challenged and stimulated. Our team is dedicated to the education and care of each child as an individual.

We encourage you to come and visit. You will find the whole school community friendly, welcoming and keen to talk with you about all that we do.
