At St Mary’s, we believe that the ability to write with confidence and accuracy is an essential life skill. Writing is a complex process that draws upon more than handwriting and spelling. It is the ability to effectively communicate ideas, information and opinions. Successful writers at St Mary's understand the features and characteristics of writing in order to use different genres appropriately and can adapt them for audience and purpose. In order to develop our young writers, we ensure that the children have access to a range of writing experiences and challenges by including a fiction, non-fiction and poetry unit into each term in every class. Sometimes our writers will be inspired by a sensational topic starter or with an exciting school trip or with a quality text; we know that motivation is key. Children are made aware of their next steps to keep building upon skills, extending their vocabulary and developing their style. At St Mary's, our Written Wonders portfolios include the very best of our children's work, are a source of pride for the children and help us to celebrate their writing journey.
