Keeping Positive in Difficult Times

We understand that with uncertain times, you may be feeling anxious but staying positive is key in dealing with difficulties.

For both children and adults, it's important to find moments of happiness in our everyday lives.

Here are some suggestions of things you can do to help your mental health:

* Stay connected with friends and family.
Although you may be self-isolating and social-distancing, we are lucky enough to live in a world where technology allows us to have conversations with many people from lots of different places. Schedule in some time to keep in touch through phone calls, video messaging or social media.

* Talk about it.
It's normal to feel a bit worried, scared or helpless about the current situation. Remember: it is OK to share your concerns with others you trust – and doing so may help them too.

If you cannot speak to someone you know or if doing so has not helped, there are plenty of helplines you can try instead.

*  Keep active.

Our physical health has a big impact on how we feel. At times like these, it can be easy to fall into unhealthy patterns of behaviour that end up making you feel worse.

Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, drink enough water and exercise regularly.

*  Don't believe everything you read online.
Try to limit the amount of time you and your children spend online. It's easy to get caught up in social media and reading news updates. Only read information on trustworthy sites and ignore fake news.

*   Time for a new hobby?

Make an effort to spend time doing something you enjoy, or something you've been meaning to try for awhile. Spend some time as a family trying out one another's hobbies.

*  And relax...
This can really help with difficult emotions and worries and can improve our well-being. Take some time to relax and take stock of what's important. Free apps such as 'Headspace for kids'(or adults) and 'Calm' can be useful to help you focus on your breathing and lower anxiety. Useful for the whole family!
