Term 1 - Class 4

Term One

Welcome back to Class 4!

KIRF'S - Key Instant Recall Facts

KIRFs are designed to support the development of the mental fluency skills that underpin much of the mathematics curriculum. They are particularly useful when calculating, be it adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing. Time is to be given each week to ensure that the KIRF is practiced and learnt so that children begin to grow in confidence and recall facts instantly. Please practise this terms KIRF with your child at home.

Curriculum

In Term 1 the children will learn about World War II in a topic called ‘Bombers and Black-Outs’.

We are really looking forward to completing a local area visit, creating newspaper reports and writing historical stories.

The History theme will continue through the term with the book War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. Children will be writing their own newspaper reports based on the Bath Blitz.

Reading

In Year 4 there is an expectation that children are reading 5 times a week. In order to keep track of this, reading records will be looked at in school every week. Therefore, please ensure that reading records are signed and brought into school on a daily basis. This is important as we have a reading reward system where children are recognised for their efforts in reading at home and we would love for every child in the class to be able to reap the rewards.

Listening to children read is generally carried out through Guided Reading sessions. However, we will endeavour to make sure that children are listened to individually as often as possible and as appropriate to each child’s needs.

Homework

Children will have homework every week which can be found in their homework books. Please ensure that your child completes their homework in order to consolidate and support their learning. Children will also have spellings and times tables linked with the KIRF. Homework will be sent home on a Friday, with the expectation that it is completed and returned to school the following Friday.
