Outdoor Play And Learning

St Mary's has recently been awarded the top category - Platinum - for our provision for Outdoor Play And Learning.
Play comes from the children, in their free time. We have a Play Policy and approach to risk management that is supported by the whole school community.
Our action plan for play development ensures we make continuous and sustained improvements to our environment, resources and training. All School Meals Supervisory Assistants are involved in the approach to play at lunchtimes. All children have wellies in school, with purpose-built sheds provided for storage. Our grounds maintenance team help mow areas to facilitate more imaginative play in grass areas. Our Play Shed is full of loose items for children to be creative, outdoors. We have a mud kitchen, tyres, wood, quiet areas in the Sensory Garden, rope swings...
We have seen clear benefits on children's enjoyment, behaviour and learning as a result of our approach. Everyone looks forward to the regular Play Days - children and teachers playing together!
