St Mary’s is a small co-educational church school, set in an idyllic rural location on the fringe of Writhlington village. The school roll is growing and is currently 127 + our Nursery. We are just about to open a new sixth class (Term 2 2017), allowing us to operate as single years in most age groups.
Class 1 Reception (four & five year olds)
Class 2 Year 1 (five & six year olds)
Class 3 Year 2 (six & seven year olds)
Class 4 Year 3 (seven & eight year olds
Class 5 Years 4 & 5 (eight to ten year olds)
Class 6 Years 5 & 6 (nine to eleven year olds)
Each class comprises mixed-ability children and the class sizes are normally small in comparison to most other primary schools, averaging mid 20s.
We are also delighted to operate our own Nursery class – the perfect introduction to our lovely school. We could accommodate up to 20 children for each session in the Nursery, including a small number of two year olds. Our Early Years team has worked hard to achieve the Bristol Standard accreditation, validators noting, "...how well the new build has integrated the nursery into the whole school community."
“In the Nursery and Reception classes, staff quickly build warm relationships with children. [They] take every opportunity to engage children in conversations and extend their learning as they explore and learn from the wide variety of stimulating practical activities, both indoors and outdoors”. Ofsted 2014
We enjoy excellent facilities including a large hall, and interactive screens in every classroom. The beautiful extensive grounds include a large playing field, quiet areas, playgrounds, conservation areas, a woodland area and a sensory garden.
“Teaching across the school is typically good and sometimes outstanding… Teachers are adept at stimulating and sustaining pupils’ engagement and pupils are kept on their toes through skilful questioning.”
“Pupils’ safety and welfare are top priorities and the school promotes healthy lifestyles very well… The extensive grounds, which include an outdoor classroom, wild area and sensory garden, are used very effectively, particularly promoting pupils’ spiritual development and their understanding of the natural world.”
We were again judged to be officially “good” in all areas by Ofsted at their last inspection in February 2014. We have a highly qualified, highly skilled staff. Teachers, Teaching Assistants and all support staff work well together to provide a school in which children feel happy and safe as well as challenged and stimulated. Our team is dedicated to the education and care of each child as an individual.
We encourage you to come and visit. You will find the whole school community friendly, welcoming and keen to talk with you about all that we do.
